Do you live in South Dakota or have previously worked or lived there? You may have unclaimed property owed to you by the state and should check with the South Dakota Treasurer to see if you have funds in your name.

Start by searching your last name or a business name. You can include a first name to narrow the results and it will automatically include nicknames common to that name (Mike for Michael, etc.) You can further narrow your search by including a city and/or zip code. A property ID can be used to conduct a search as well. Here are further instructions for conducting a search.
If you find you have unclaimed property in your name, you will need to file a claim – which you can do online. Instructions for submitting a claim can be found here.

South Dakota notes that you can make a claim anytime since Unclaimed Property is kept in a custodial capacity until the rightful owner or heir has successfully claimed the property. They say it generally takes about two to three weeks to process a claim. If you don’t hear back after that time period, it is suggested you contact their office or check the status online.
